I am a science graduate (Biology/Nutrition) with a First Class Honours Degree and a PhD in Exercise Physiology from London University. I am the mother of two children; one was a Countdown (Channel 4) series champion a UK Youth Scrabble champion and is now a Cambridge graduate, the other is practising as a junior doctor.
I have 25 years teaching experience in Higher Education, (including 25 years as an Admissions Tutor) and 11 years tutoring experience for the 11+ exams in Kingston and Sutton. Children I have taught have achieved maximum scores (140) for both papers in the Tiffin exams and been offered places at all the local and not so local selective schools.
I tutor in small groups (of up to 8 children) because children enjoy learning with their peers and are motivated to improve their performance when learning with others (rather like attending a swimming club or ballet class). Tutoring for the 11+ is different from school teaching, because there is a high standard that must be reached by each child if they are to be successful in their quest to gain a place at the highly coveted grammar schools. My approach is to set an increasingly fast pace and increasingly harder questions to ensure that the child is best prepared to sit the exam. Individual weaknesses are addressed in class and by setting appropriate homework. Parental involvement in the learning process is encouraged.
