Personal Description:
I live in Cheshire and have a 11 year old daughter and 8 year old son. I enjoy camping, the outdoors & the countryside in general. We like to travel around the UK, especially Scotland & Southern Ireland. I have enjoyed being successful professionally & in my academic career & I am always looking for new opportunities to make the best use of the skills I've developed over the years. I am an avid collector of rare coins and specialise in Canadian and Chinese varities. I enjoy the gym and workout quite often.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching in Further & Higher education for the past 21 years & I was Head of Subject at a College with Beacon status in the North West for 12 years. My ALPS value added results are in the top 25th percentile nationally and are graded thus as excellent. I am an examiner with a leading examination board for both politics and sociology. I have been tutoring privately for several years and as you can see here, my feedback has been exceptionally good. One Sociology student had been denied the opportunity to sit retakes at his college because his teachers thought he'd fail. He contacted me and we worked together in Northwich twice a week for three moths and his external candidate retakes changed from U's and E's to A's. This was very satisfying for me & the student concerned as he was able to go on & take a degree in Law, something he wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. Currently, I am tutoring students in Sociology and Politics across AQA, Edexcel and OCR Boards. I specialise in supporting University students with essays (editing/improving) and with dissertations and exam prep. More University students at under-graduate and post-graduate levels are coming to me for support in international relations, cultural studies, politics and sociology. These students were expected to get third class degrees but were awarded upper seconds (2.1) in summer 2015/16. I was extremley pleased to receive such news from them along with excellent feedback. I have been writing a number of articles for Sociology Review on Religion, Modernity and Post-Modernity, Education and Crime. I 2017 I have continued supporting University students with their essays, dissertations and Doctoral degrees. I am examining Politics and Sociology again this summer and thus have a contract with the leading examination board to examine the New Sociology specification 7192/2. I have been certified as qualified to teach low ability learners effectively having completed a course in 2016 and have been a mentor for new teachers seeking to join the profession. I have been a successful teacher in schools, colleges and universities and in doing so I have a breadth of experience which allows me a unique insight about what is needed as A level and beyond.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to treat every student as an individual & seek to respond to their individual learning needs. I offer a very reliable, high standard of service & see us as working together to achieve a common objective, that of success in the summative examinations. Being an examiner for sociology is also a real advantage for my tutees too. More recently, I have been working with Nelson Thornes and a leading Examination Board to provide 200 online Sociology learning resources for publication in support of their A2 core text. I record podcasts to help my politics and sociology students and I make these available either on u-tube or my own website. I offer online tuition and this has proved popular and very successful at heavily discounted rates for block bookings. Using my own online interactive quizzes, past papers, mark schemes and other electronic resources has really helped to make the tutorial experience a varied and stimulating one. The £25.00 rate is based on block of 10 hours so it makes private tuition affordable. Whilst many tutors offer a valuable critique of student writing, I pride myself on actually doing the writing myself too. This way when a student has completed a paragraph for me online I can send them my version for comparison. By doing this the learner can see their strengths and weaknesses and will have an exemplar for revision which they can copy and paste into a Word Doc. One of the most valuable services I provide in addition to the traditional tutorials is the very detailed feedback provided on student essays/short answers. By using Word Comment I can offer corrections, additions, examples, conceptual advice and essay technique tips with great clarity. By selecting me as tutor, your grades will significantly improve and you will be prepared for University in the best way possible.

Julian is professional, thorough and extremely reliable and my son is making real progress with him, while also enjoying their sessions.
The feedback Julian gives is detailed and this approach has given my son a much better understanding of how to answer exam questions and refine his exam technique. This has also led to greater self-confidence.
I have no hesitation in recommending Julian as a tutor.
vocabulary and conceptual understanding.
on my online tutoring, your son was a pleasure to teach.
The nature of the tutoring is also excellent; being tailored to the way I personally learn best to make sure I get optimum learning from them, I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to enhance their learning as they have been an invaluable aid to my exam preparation.
The issues came when I queried the amount of hours Julian claimed I’d used, he wouldn’t show me his log or any evidence to back himself up. All of our lessons were on Skype so it wasn’t hard to prove his claim wrong. His only defence was that I didn’t understand the time it took to mark work- meaning it took him 5 hours for 2 short pieces. He then said he would not discuss it and refused to continue tutoring me. He only offered to refund the amount he thought I had left and after leaving ‘satisfactory’ feedback.
I genuinely enjoyed my sessions but his block booking system is not trustworthy and he quickly turned unreasonable and incredibly condescending.
