I am a composer, with performances at Purcell Room, Southwark Cathedral, Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club etc.
I have worked as an orchestral horn player, early music editor, contributor to Encyclopaedia Britannica etc., Classical Music Editor: Time Out, theatre composer [and Theatre-in-Education writer], conductor...
I have run family music sessions and community festivals with folk, classical, world music, jazz etc.
Lecturer: Zurich Konservatorium, Goldsmiths College [London University], Morley College, Saint Martins Art School
Piano, composition, chamber music etc. tutor for Camden Music Service [schools and Saturday Music Centre]
I like Schumann's motto: "No one can do more than he understands. Nobody understands more than he can do". I encourage students to do and learn by doing. This is both more fun and more effective than by passive abstractions.
By listening and participating in all kinds of music making - by imitation, improvisation, and by the use of simplified models, diagrams etc. it is possible to capture the spirit and substance and the techniques of any musical 'language' and to experience how each musical system develops and changes in history.
I can enter composition students for the London College of Music/Thames Valley University Composition Grade exams. Piano pupils usually prefer the Trinity/Guildhall Music certificate
