Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified teacher of both mathematics and science to GCSE. I have 9 years experience of working with students with a wide range of academic abilities in an inner city Academy. My first teaching degree was from the University of Sunderland was in secondary science, specialising in biology. I then undertook additional training to enable me to teach mathematics. I personally enjoy learning, and am currently studying modules with the Open University for the personal challenge it offers. I have been registered with First Tutors for two full academic years.

Tutoring Experience:

I have nine years teaching experience, where I gained valuable experience with teaching both mathematics and science to GCSE level. Lessons were planned and tailored for the students in the class to ensure that progress was made. My GCSE examination results were consistently well above average for the school. During my time there I achieved the highest pass rates at A*- C on two different years. I would often take both individual students and small groups for tutoring sessions after school as and when needed, be this for exam preparation or for coursework. As a teacher I was always happy to offer extra support to any student who felt they needed it, regardless of their level, be this before or after school.

Tutoring Approach:

With tutoring, my main objective is to raise the achievements of my students, help them improve their ability and build their confidence with the material being studied. I generally assess new students to begin with so that I have a baseline to work from and then can focus on area/topics that the student needs the most support/help with. I believe that the key to success is ensuring that the foundations of a subject/topic are securely understood before progressing onto more complex and challenging tasks. I move at a pace that suits my students whilst remaining challenging, and am more than happy to support them with any question/problem they may be struggling with. I have well resourced revision past paper questions and materials for the new GCSE examinations.
