I have been successfully tutoring for a number of years now, and it's my favourite part of education, as it's really rewarding to see the rapid progress that can be achieved by working one-to-one. Typical situations are:
- GCSE students who find themselves with D grades (in England: grade 3) after mock exams, and are aiming for a B (grade 5/6) or higher;
- students who are achieving top grades in all their subjects except English;
- students aiming for a C (grade 4/5) grade but struggling to get there without some extra help;
- students wishing to take an IGCSE in English which isn't offered by their school.
My first degree is Joint Honours in English & Archaeology (upper second class honours), because I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to be Indiana Jones or Charlotte Bronte. I have a PGCE in Secondary English with History from the University of Oxford, and have postgraduate qualifications in IT and E-commerce. The very last thing I did was a GCSE in Latin a few years ago, so I have a very clear recollection of what an anxious time exams can bring!
I qualified to teach secondary English and History in 1999, and before then I was a postgraduate tutor to undergraduates. Since qualifying I have worked in secondary schools in England and Wales, as well as a middle school where I taught upper primary children. I have also taught English as an additional language to children and adults of many nationalities.
I have tutored many students now from schools in Chester, Wrexham, Flintshire and the Wirral. I have been honoured to share in their success stories, especially on Results Day in August, when it's always lovely to hear from students who have surpassed their predicted grades and their own expectations.
I am also an exam marker, currently at GCSE level with WJEC, AQA and Edexcel (Pearson), but am familiar with other exam boards too. I have written books for teachers, and contributed to study guides for the publishers CGP. I have tutored online for Channel 4's Homework High website and have also tutored for Easter revision schools for students who wanted to make sure they got at least C grades at GCSE.
It's difficult to generalise because every student should receive personalised learning: after all, that's why you employ a tutor. However, there are some constants: I provide materials to introduce and / or consolidate new skills. I will assess where you are with your studies at the moment, find out where improvements can be made, and ensure you make progress that will have effects not just in English, but across all your subjects, because you will be able to communicate and understand more clearly.
