Personal Description:

Passionate about learning and teaching, I recently graduated with a Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Stirling in Scotland. My previous degree was a BA (hons) in German and French, involving a year abroad to master these two languages. This experience I feel has given me a sound understanding of the challenges faced when learning a foreign language, allowing me to better assist anyone trying to learn English as a second language.

Tutoring Experience:

Currently I am an English tutor at Stirling School of English, teaching various classes including IELTS, FCE and ACE exam preparation classes. I also teach occasional conversation classes for all levels from beginners to advanced students of English, as well as proof-reading university dissertations and PHD proposals.
In addition to my teaching degree, I recently passed a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) online course and advanced course in Teaching Young Learners.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in varied, task-based learning, with maximum student talking time and minimal teacher talking time. English grammar is taught inductively, with students working out the grammar rules using guided discovery techniques, and vocabulary is categorised into topical sets, easing retention of new vocabulary. Students are encouraged to bring in their own materials, based on their personal interests, which are used as learning tools and the basis for motivating lesson plans. As well as authentic reading texts, music and videos are also included in many lesson plans. An English language needs analysis is completed during the first lesson, from which a tailor-made syllabus will be designed for future classes. Monthly progress tests are carried out to ensure that student progress is monitored and assessed.
