Hello, my name's Josh and I have recently moved back to Edinburgh after living in Brighton for 7 years, having grown up here, and am looking to tutor students from ages 11-16, either in preparation for examinations or to help further their general understanding of mathematics.
I have two years teaching experience a very wide range of abilities at an 11-16 secondary school in Hastings, East Sussex.
I have a very strong knowledge base of the English and Scottish secondary mathematics curricula. At my disposal I have a large range of resources to help your child learn in a way that is best for them.
I am free to tutor during the day or in the evenings on weekdays. I am not always available on weekends, but am happy to be flexible, especially when it is nearer to examinations.
In my spare time I am interested in going to art galleries and museums, watching films, playing and watching rugby and cooking.
I have a PGCE qualification from the University of Brighton, and two years teaching experience at St Leonards Academy in Hastings, East Sussex, where I taught a very wide range of abilities from ages 11-16.
I have tutored multiple students at Nat5/Higher/GCSE/IGCSE level in the past three years.
I find that a calm, relaxed atmosphere is most useful for students when either learning new material or when revising before an examination. Personally, I believe that building a good relationship with students and parents/carers is vital to helping students progress rapidly and with confidence.
I use a mix of worked and live examples, consolidation exercises, examination questions, verbal questioning and problem-solving activities to check students' understanding at various points throughout a tutoring session.
I also use a mix of electronic and paper-based resources, depending on the topic(s) we are covering in that session.
My belief is that creating a safe environment where it is okay to make mistakes and find things difficult, as long as a good effort is made, breeds resilience and confidence, making long-term success inevitable.
In addition to this, throughout tutoring sessions I give tips on general exam techniques or for specific types of questions.
I can also set and mark (to examiner's specifications) examination papers. I will give an accurate grade and a detailed feedback sheet broken down question-by-question so students can see their strengths and areas to work on. These are charged at £10 each and can be used for extra revision or to inform topics covered in tutoring sessions.
