Personal Description:

I am a recent graduate from the University of Cambridge, now living in London.

At Cambridge I received a Double First, as well as the Thomas Richardson Scholarship for English, and won the Peterhouse English Prize in both 2015 and 2016. I have a broad range of interests in English literature. In my final year I specialised in a variety of subjects, including Tragedy; American literature, painting, and jazz; the relationship between literature, philosophy, and political thought; and wrote a dissertation on vision and subjectivity in Shakespeare’s Sonnets.

I am also a keen linguist, and in my second year took modules from the Modern and Medieval Languages degree alongside my English degree, specialising in French Culture and Thought from 1500-1700. In the summer of 2014 I received funding to live and study at La Sorbonne in Paris, where I received certification of fluency, CEFR Level C1.

My approach to academic learning is characterised by a serious commitment to creativity and the arts. I held a Choral Scholarship at Cambridge, sang Tenor in college and university choirs, and played violin in the University String Ensemble. I also wrote and directed plays at the ADC Theatre, radio drama for CamFM, and Tour Managed the Cambridge Footlights International Tour Show 2015.

Tutoring Experience:

I have experience tutoring for secondary and university entrance exams, particularly in writing effective Personal Statements and Oxbridge interviews. I also have experience tutoring GCSEs and A Levels across various exam boards in the last few years, and so am knowledgeable about the specifics of what each exam will require.

Tutoring Approach:

I want to apply what I learned about personalised one-on-one teaching at Cambridge to help my students. I believe the best way to help someone learn is to get to know them, and understand the way that each individual thinks differently. That way, we can approach the subject from the same perspective rather than meeting at logger-heads. This is something that few schools, however good, can offer to every individual and it is why I enjoy tutoring so much.

I understand that often the purpose of tutoring is targeted towards a specific exam or goal, and so I work with the student to make sure we always know what we are aiming for. However, I passionately believe that the best way to achieve results is to encourage a genuine enthusiasm for a subject, and to explore everything exciting about learning. My role as Tutor is to inspire this interest, without ever losing focus of the tasks ahead.

I challenge students to think confidently and critically about language and literature, by developing their analytical, essay-writing and exam skills. I want them to get high marks, and I also want them to be passionate readers, thinkers and speakers. I can teach anywhere between 11+ and undergraduate.
