Joseph

I studied Musicology at Oxford University, earning a First Class undergraduate degree with the third highest mark in the year, a Masters with Distinction and, in 2019, I was awarded a DPhil/PhD. During this time I held an Organ Scholarship at Jesus College, the John Brookman Scholarship at Wadham College, and a Graduate Development Scholarship at St Anne’s College.

Aside from teaching, I also work as a sound artist and performer and my work has featured in venues across Europe and Japan. In my spare time, I enjoy learning to play new musical instruments, 20th-century art and literature, and exploring South East London.

Tutoring Experience

I worked as a tutor at the University of Oxford for three years, specialising in music history, the philosophy and sociology of music, composition, and essay writing and study skills. Since 2013 I have also been involved in the admissions process at Oxford University’s Faculty of Music, acting as the central marker for performance auditions and composition submissions.

Now a private tutor with more than 1000 hours of 1:1 teaching experience, I specialise in music and the humanities, Oxbridge entrance, and school entrance exams. Equally comfortable working with early-stage as I am with adult learners, my subject knowledge is as broad as my client base, teaching students from Kazahkstan to Angola, China to Bermuda, coaching students towards successful entry to top UK schools at 11+ and 13+, success at GCSE and A Level, as well as mentoring adult learners in a number of disciplines.

Tutoring Approach

I like teaching that is adaptive, responding to the individual needs of each of his students and tailoring my method accordingly. Allied with this is my firm belief that showing is more valuable teaching approach than telling; a student will learn better, and remember what they have learnt for longer, if they are given the space to find out answers for themselves. It's also much more fun!
