I teach both from my home in Kingston, near Lewes and also in Brighton and Hove. I have been singing pretty much all my life and still love it! I started professional training at the age of 10 after landing the role of 'Dorothy' in 'The Wizard Of Oz' and never looked back. I work now as a vocal coach as well as doing professional singing work (I have worked as backing singer for Astrid Williamson, session singer for various recording studios, lead singer of three functions bands and as vocal coach/mentor for national singing contests) but my primary love is teaching. Seeing (and hearing!) students grow in their confidence and ability is the best reward. I stage live music gigs every year (optional!) for my students to gain experience in performing on microphones in front of an audience in a supportive environment; the best exercise for confidence building.
I started teaching 17 years ago at Nick's Music Studios in Brighton, where I worked for 4 years. I then moved to Sparker Studios in Brighton and also started to teach privately at home. I currently teach singing classes at the Alexandra Dance Academy and for Susanna Cassam Music Tuition as well as continuing my private teaching practice. I have worked as vocal coach/mentor for national singing contests as well as giving tutoring sessions to various musical theatre companies.
I am very encouraging and supportive as I remember the nerves I first felt when starting out on my singing journey! I structure my lessons to cover equal amounts of vocal techniques and putting those techniques into practice with actual songs. I am very focused on vocal health so use effective vocal exercises to establish good - and safe - singing practices. I focus on breathing, posture, placement, control and performance. I tailor a Vocal Plan for students after their first lesson and revisit the Plan every 6 lessons to assess progress and if the direction needs to change at all. I encourage students to choose their own material as I feel it is important for them to love what they are singing! I guide them with these choices so the material is appropriate for their vocal type and ability. I regularly stage live music gigs so students have the opportunity to perform live in front of a supportive audience as I find this is the most effective (and fun!) way to build confidence.
