Personal Description:

In June 2014 I graduated with the highest mark in my year at the University of Manchester (BA Hons. Philosophy, first class), winning several awards for my performance on the course. Since then I have been working in a dementia home as well as on a writing project, although in future I hope to return to academia. In the long term I aspire to become a writer of fiction and an academic.

I first got into philosophy when as a small child I learned the word 'why'. Since then, the questions have not stopped, and I would be delighted to be able to help others learn how to think critically and demonstrate it in their writing. I am in my element when communicating with and facilitating the understanding of others; I find I get a natural high from successfully explaining a new concept or idea. I believe the easiest and best way to become really good at something is to have fun doing it. Philosophy involves imagining and examining possibilities. I hope to show my tutees how much fun philosophy can be, through just how far it can stretch our infinitely powerful imaginations.

As well as encouraging the love for the subject that I believe is necessary for development, I will also help students with the practical skills of essay writing and textual analysis necessary for success in all humanities subjects. I have an excellent understanding of this skill set, having used it to consistently excel for the three years of my undergraduate study.

Tutoring Experience:

Because I have only just finished my undergraduate studies, I have no formal teaching experience as of yet. However, I have been involved in several projects which have equipped me with relevant skills and shaped my ideas about teaching.

In 2012 I founded and chaired the University of Manchester Creative Writing Society. My duties included devising and running workshops in which members evaluated each others' work, discussed the creative process, and performed practice exercises to hone their skills. These workshops were a great success and the society continues to blossom. My involvement with the Creative Writing Society allowed me to see the extent to which individual learning styles can differ, suggesting that a receptive teaching approach tailored to the preferences of each individual student is the best way to make the most of one-on-one tuition time. I also learned the importance of a relaxed, open environment in which to work, as often students are constricted by the expectations they perceive in their teachers, struggling to give the 'right' answer instead of thinking freely.

Tutoring Approach:

As stated above, my approach to tutoring will be one receptive to the individual needs and preferences of each student.

Before Sessions Begin
I will ask for some samples of recent academic work prior to teaching, in order to evaluate the abilities of students before we begin. I will also familiarise myself with any specific texts or material students may desire to work through. This will allow me to prepare a plan for each session based upon what students' particular needs may be.

Half of the time spent tutoring students will involve informal discussion. Firstly I will get to know each student, as well as telling them a little about myself and my academic interests. Specific problems and worries can also be addressed at this point. As well as this, I will facilitate topic-specific debates with students, aiming to provide an experience that is stimulating and fun. These debates will subsequently be analysed - such analysis allows familiarisation with both the topics at hand and also the general rules of logic and critical thinking.

Study Skills
The second half of tutoring sessions will be spent looking more closely at the specific study skills necessary to excel in any humanities subject, such as essay planning and writing, textual analysis, and independent research. I can provide formal structures which students may use to aid them with these practices, or alternatively we can work together to devise systems tailored to students' individual strengths and preferences.

Homework Assignments
I can also provide assignments for students to complete outside of their sessions, which I will then look at and take them through next time. These can range from more formal essay-type tasks, good for honing exam or coursework skills, to more creative free-form or research based tasks in order to enrich a student's general understanding and (most importantly!) encourage them to cultivate a personal interest in their subject.
