Personal Description:

I am a qualified teacher, experienced informal educator and professional science communicator. My degree was in the History and Philosophy of Science and I have a keen enthusiasm for the subjects I teach. I have worked with young people for nearly 20 years and with students from a diverse range of backgrounds and learning needs and can adapt my teaching style to an individual learner. My skills combine detailed knowledge of the curriculum, an understanding of how students learn and the communication of Maths and Science in a simple and engaging way. I have a dedicated tutoring space in my home with educational resources, a whiteboard, desk and computer, although I am also happy to travel within the area to teach at students' houses.

Tutoring Experience:

Jan 2004 - Sep 2012 - Maths and Science tutor up to AS Maths and Chemistry and GCSE Physics and Biology.
Sep - 2011 - Jun 2012 - PGCE at UCL Institute of Education in secondary science teaching.
Sep - 2012 - Jul 2016 - Secondary science teacher specialising in Physics up to A2 at Graveney School

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that effective tutoring makes the student active in their learning. The one to one interaction allows for the student to ask many more questions and discuss topics to a greater depth than may happen in a classroom. I think it is important to give time to allow discussions that go beyond the curriculum as it encourages a student's sense of curiosity. I also use interactive activities to give the student the opportunity to apply their new knowledge and embed the learning. They also help us to see the progress being made which builds confidence in the student. I provide a student with the tools to be an independent learner by modelling reasoning skills, and effective learning and revision techniques. I also believe that learning should be a pleasant experience and aim to make the discussion material as engaging and interesting as possible.
