I am a recently retired Head of Mathematics (age range 11-18) having about 20 years teaching experience in the independent sector. During this time I have given private lessons in mathematics mainly for all secondary ages and some physics at GCSE level.
I am married with two grown up children - one is in infant teaching and the other is employed in the advertising industry. My main interests include conducting my own research and writing of articles in many areas of mathematics - some of these have been published in the Mathematical Association's Gazette. I have numerous other interests that include jazz music; films; book and music collection; astronomy; cycling and hill walking.
From 1984 to 2004 I was engaged in maths teaching on the Isle of Wight; at both Bembridge School and at Westmont School in Newport. I was also employed as a part-time evening lecturer at the Mid Kent College for Further Education during the 1980s while in full-time employment with GEC-Marconi in Rochester.
I have given private tutoring to many pupils (including some adults taking GCSE maths and numeracy for their PGCE) since 1980 while being employed in industry and afterwards in full-time teaching on the Isle of Wight.
Please note: I can only tutor on the ISLE OF WIGHT and NOT in the PORTSMOUTH/GOSPORT area.
I prefer to visit private pupils at their home: firstly to keep in constant communication with parents and secondly to ensure the pupil is secure in their own home with at least one other adult present during tuition. My methods are essentially diagnostic and cure. This means finding out where doubts and weaknesses are in the subject together with gaps in knowledge and then carefully going through separate areas with pupil's own books as well as my own resources.
