I have recently completed a BSc degree in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath As part of my course at university I undertook a year in industry in the Forensic Services department at Smith & Williamson, a leading firm of accountants.
I am very passionate about Maths, and personally excelled in the subject during my school years. I achieved an A* grade in my Maths GCSE, an A* grade in Maths A-Level and an A grade in Further Maths A-Level.
I hold a strong personal sporting interest and regularly play squash and exercise at the gym. I find sport in general is a great way to ease any pressures in life!
I began tutoring in early 2017 and have so far mentored GCSE, A-Level and some primary school children. In the months that I've been teaching I have received some excellent feedback from parents, some of whom have passed on recommendations of me to other parents. This quickly built up a to a steady number of tutees each week. All students I have tutored for have achieved their target grade or better.
I am really enjoying the experience and my tutees are very comfortable working with me and are becoming confident in the subject as a whole. They like how I help them consolidate and build upon what they learn from lessons in school, as well as provide clarity on areas of difficulty.
I like to teach in a way that my students can follow easily. Even difficult Mathematical concepts can be easier to comprehend by breaking them up into smaller but simpler problems. Often students say to me in lessons that their school teachers communicate concepts poorly, over-complicate problems and don't give adequate explanations. My current students regularly commend me for my ability to explain such concepts much more concisely. My primary goal is to ensure my students end the lesson as a more knowledgeable mathematician than they were when they began!
A Maths lecturer at Bath once stated to us in a class "A Mathematical Proof must also make sense as a piece of English". In other words, the proof must also be comprehensible to someone with limited subject knowledge. I feel this is very applicable to my style of teaching Maths. I am very meticulous with how I like to present any material that I teach, ensuring that my students will understand it fully both at the time and also when revisiting during revision.
Lessons can be tailored to the specific needs of the tutee themselves, but I do encourage regular practice of exam questions and any additional exercises from textbooks or online. I am more than happy to teach particular topics of concern from scratch. I do however stress particular emphasis on exam technique in lessons. This is something I have excellent knowledge of, having done my GCSE's and A-Level's quite recently. I believe my recent experiences and tips can help students develop their own exam technique.
Above all I like to keep lessons interesting, engaging, and understandable, whilst encouraging students to think intuitively and outside of the box where possible. I take great personal satisfaction in seeing students gain understanding from what I teach them and consequently making progress in their studies.
