This is how 3 referees rated Jonathan:
I graduated from Northumbria University in 2010 having completed eight years in Higher Education from Bachelors, through Masters, to PhD. I entered university as a mature student via an access course after spending over twenty years as a self-employed musician and as such have acquired a wide range of life experience outside the education system which I find very helpful when tutoring. My specialist subject area brings together two main passions - history and music - 'Youth Culture and Popular Music in the North of England Post - 1945'. As such I am primarily a cultural historian. However, whilst studying for my doctorate I taught first year undergraduates on a regular basis in subjects ranging from 'The Crusades' to 'The End of the Cold War'. My Masters is in historical research which means I am able to offer a comprehensive and specialised insight into the historian's craft.
I have tutored undergraduates in a wide range of historical topics in seminars which I prepared, and I have written and delivered lectures. I have marked essays and exam papers at this level. As a tutor/mature student I have mentored students in a similar predicament and understand many of the issues and difficulties that are sometimes encountered whether as a first-time undergraduate or re-entering education.
My approach to tutoring will vary according to individual needs. 'Skype video call' is an excellent and free method of providing face to face tutorials without the inconvenience of travel. Once established tutoring can proceed in the way best suited to achieve the tutee's aims without the 'us and them' atmosphere that often pervades the student/lecturer relationship. At all degree levels my theoretical work was regarded as a particular strongpoint therefore I could be a great help in tackling those 'dreaded' theoretical historical concepts that crop up on many history degree courses.
