Government and Politics
I have recently retired early from teaching in a Sixth Form College to do a mixture of voluntary work, tutoring and grandparenting… Although I am over 60, neither I, nor more importantly my wife, consider that I am old. I greatly enjoy teaching, but I found the bureaucracy and the lack of contact time I had helping students in need disappointing. I am enjoying the opportunities which personal tuition and voluntary work in a primary school give to help individuals. Tutoring also allows me the opportunity to use my fascination with History and Politics for a wider purpose. I have written three A level History text books on modern European History for Hodder and Pearson Education. I have been an Examiner for Edexcel.
I have taught in 11-18 comprehensive schools and sixth form and tertiary colleges for over thirty years. Most of my time has been spent teaching A level History, especially modern history. For the last twenty years I also taught AS and A level British and American Politics. Throughout my career I have been a Personal Tutor where I greatly enjoyed helping to guide students' learning, and their overall development.
As a tutor I initially focus on what the student identifies as his or her problems, and then might gradually identify other weaknesses or areas that need development. Personal tutoring gives me the opportunity to allow the student to display, in a friendly atmosphere, her or his understanding, and for me to then refine this as needs be. I prepare carefully for tutoring sessions and use a variety of exercises to help assess learning, making use of diagrams, charts and card sorting exercises (with copies of answers) to test and consolidate understanding. I set guided reading, exercises and exam practice to be done outside the tutorials, and then focus on giving detailed advice when I go through them with the student. I try to establish a relaxed but purposeful atmosphere where the student feels at ease, and thus is likely to be more forthcoming and thereby gain greater benefit. I email the same day a detailed summary of key points that emerged from the tutorial so that we both have a record; and then send a provisional tutorial plan in advance of the next tutorial.
