Philosophy / Critical Thinking
I am currently working in Spain, so am unable to take up tutoring requests. I have tried to deactivate my profile temporarily, but this option wasn´t available, so am keeping the listing going on the chance that I will be back in the UK at some point.
I have four years of teaching experience at a secondary school on the fringe of north-east London. I have taught French and German to kids aged 11-18. This included 32 pupil groups studying for GCSE German and French, and much smaller groups for A Level. At A-Level none of my students achieved lower than a grade C, with two going on to study at Cambridge (other subjects much to my regret), but two are now studying German (at Warwick and Sheffield). All of them met or exceeded their target grades.
I have three years experience of teaching AQA Philosophy, and was Head of Department for the latter two years. This gave me good scope across the curriculum in modules such as Reason and Experience, Why Should I be Governed?, God and the World, Tolerance, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Moral Philosophy. My text specialism is John Stuart Mill's On Liberty, but I would be willing to work with other texts e.g. Plato's Republic, Descartes' Meditations, but not Nietzsche, more out of not wanting to read him again than anything! The numbers of students for Philosophy steadily grew in my time at the school, and of the 18 students that graduated in three years, none of them achieved less than a C grade, and all of them met their targets.
I really try to individualise my approach to tutoring. I would initially aim to get a good idea of what your goals are through tutoring, whether it be a particular qualification, a certain level of fluency, or just for fun. I would ensure good and productive use of time and try to give honest and rich feedback along the way so you can see where you are doing well and where you need to improve.
With French and German, I have always tried to help learners discover the secret tricks to language learning, as well as enthuse them with my passion for the subject. Languages are challenging subjects, particularly at GCSE when kids are in large groups and have long coursework assignments and limited chances to practice speaking or writing in authentic situations, but I strongly believe anyone can succeed if they adopt the right mindset. Building confidence through step by step success is key to my approach. I can either structure the session as a continuation of work in class, or as entirely separate.
With Philosophy, a discursive approach to going through content and critical thinking, combined with practice writing essays is a sure fire recipe for improvement and enjoyment of the subject. I have developed my style over three years, and have a large bank or resources and readings to help enrich and further understanding between sessions.
