This is how 3 referees rated John:
I have over twenty years' experience of teaching Biology to A-level (as well as to Access students, where no prior knowledge was expected) and always achieved virtually a 100% success rate (in terms of University entrance).
In addition I have now been tutoring for over five years and get consistently good feedback from my tutees and their parents:
"Just wanted to say thank you for tutoring [my daughter] over the last 9 months. She seems so much more confident in her understanding of the subject and the exam today, by all accounts, went quite well. We're really hopeful that she's got the B grade she needs and don't think she would be in this position without your help."
"Thank you so much for your help, I definitely wouldn't have got the B without you!"
"I got a grade in Human Biology which I'm very happy with and would like to thank you very much for your help over the past year."
"Just a quick note to thank you for helping [my son] get an A in his Biology. It really is fantastic."
Here are some other (also unsolicited) comments I have had about my tutoring:
"All your tuition was very helpful because I got 80%/A in the final Biology module giving me a grade B overall."
"John – we would like to join in thanking you for all your help. [Our daughter] is justifiably over the moon with her results. We will certainly pass your details on to anyone else who needs extra Biology tuition."
"Just got my exam results and I got the grade in Biology that I needed.
Thanks for all your help with the Biology, I couldn’t have got the grade without your help.
Thanks again for your help in the revision and building my confidence."
I have extensive experience of tutoring: from 7 year-olds struggling with their numeracy, through young teenagers working on Key Stage Science and then their GCSEs, on to AS and A2 students who want to get top grades in their A-level Biology examinations. I am familiar with specifications, sample papers and past paper questions from AQA, OCR and Edexcel/SNAB.
Apart from my extensive teaching experience, I have worked as a trainer in personal and career development, so am well placed to deal with issues around self-confidence and mental attitude. I have excellent communication skills, connect easily with people and am empathetic and understanding.
NB It is not clear on this webpage so I am pointing it out here: I do NOT travel to students' homes (I have a lot of resources on my PC which I need to use and in any case I do not have sufficient time between students to travel). Sorry!

We all know that any classroom-based teaching system will not always be the best method for helping all children to learn: our children are individuals and they sometimes require another, additional, approach. What is needed in these circumstances is the gentle guiding hand of an experienced educator to rekindle (or perhaps to kindle in the first place!) your son or daughter's enthusiasm and desire to learn: this is what I do.
When teaching, I promote understanding rather than just learning by rote, so my students learn to deal with assessments and exams with confidence and, of course, I can also give them extensive experience and practice at dealing with exam questions.
I am extremely flexible and versatile and can readily adapt my teaching style to best suit the needs of my tutees and I convey ideas and information in a highly effective way. I am able to take into account and work with different learning styles, so that tutees learn quickly and successfully. Because of my extensive training experience outside the classroom, I can bring a variety of skills and techniques into play, including extra support with study skills and exam technique, to help my tutees achieve success: with me you do not get just a subject tutor!
