Personal Description:

Having just finished my second year studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge, I am very much a student, and still enjoying the learning process myself. As well as having a great interest in my subject, I take pleasure from teaching it even more, and have desire to become a teacher when I graduate. The fact I am still a student also means that I retain a good understanding of my A level and GCSE courses, and am in touch with what examiners are looking for from students. My desire to teach stems from having a younger sister who has struggled academically in the past, particularly in the subjects which I enjoy. Helping her since she was young, right up until her GCSEs which she has recently sat, has taught me a great deal about teaching, and the patience which is required to help someone succeed. I am looking to tutor science to young children, hoping to inspire an interest for science in them. However, I also wish to tutor older students, who need help or guidance with their GCSE or A level courses. Furthermore, I am interested in tutoring students who have left school this year, and are moving to university to study biology next year. I wish I had received tutoring between school and university in order to help me ease between the two very different learning styles.

Tutoring Experience:

I have volunteered as a teacher's assistant at East Oxford Primary School, helping children with their science, and hoping to inspire an interest for science in them.
I have done private tutoring in Maths and Biology in Oxford at the pre GCSE level for several children.
I have helped my sister through years of struggling with maths and science, including helping her with her GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe that the most important route to success in a subject is to have a genuine interest, and desire to learn about that subject. For young students, I hope to inspire such an interest by covering what has already been covered at school, but using relatable examples to help emphasise the concepts. Furthermore, I hope to cover some material that may not have been covered at school, and which would serve both to further inspire an interest in science, and complement topics covered at school.

For students studying both GCSEs and A levels I understand the importance of having an extremely firm grasp of the syllabus, and being able to convince the examiner of this understanding. The former can be achieved by looking at topics covered in detail, hoping to expose any gaps in understanding, and fill them in. The latter can be achieved by close work with mark schemes, and discussing the best ways to demonstrate understanding in the most efficient way.

For students who have recently finished school, I am keen to give tutoring in order to ease the transition from school to university. For students specifically studying Biology or Natural Sciences, I would be able to provide a basic level of understanding of the concepts which were not covered at A level. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, I would be able to help students engage with a university style of learning, and give guidance with how to write "science essays", a type of question which is not common at school, but ubiquitous at university.
