Personal Description:

I am a mature, self-motivated and hard-working individual and I am enthusiastic about achieving my goals of gaining a degree in Geography and going onto teaching in the future. I am currently studying in my third year with the aim to achieve an overall first class BSc Honours in Geography at the University of Hertfordshire before undertaking a PGCE.

I was honoured to be informed in 2014 that I had secured a place as one of the top four Geographers in the UK and was selected to represent the UK. Since then I have competed for the UK in the International Geography Olympiad in Krakow, Poland in August (2014) and took first place in the fieldwork examinations as well as securing an overall bronze medal!

I am keen to develop my understanding of our rapidly changing world by combining elements of both physical and human Geography. Gaining an understanding of the world from social, economic, political and environmental perspectives has never been more critical than it is today. The way Geography helps me understand the complexity of the world as it changes from one day to the next is what makes it so special.

Tutoring Experience:

Between 2013-2014 I assisted Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 Geography lessons, marking and creating resources for lessons and open evenings. My involvement within the Geography department have me a great sense of responsibility which was very rewarding. I have also helped lead fieldwork trips which has allowed me to build upon my geographical and fieldwork skills as leadership skills. Through this experience I have acquired valuable life skills such as organisation, leadership and communication as well as using my initiative to adapt to individual requirements.

Further to this I have supported 8 students over the past two years, in last years examinations all students grades had increased by at least two grades from the initial grade being achieved. I am extremely proud of all the hard work the students put in and it was a pleasure in guiding them through this process. The results for 2016 examinations are to be released in August.

Tutoring Approach:

I seek to motivate and encourage students ensuring they feel more confident in their application of Geographical knowledge. I take a flexible approach to tutoring and tailor my lessons to what the tutee requires. Some tutee's may need to focus on their application of knowledge through exam practice, whilst others may need support with the content of their course - both of which I can provide. I am confident with the Edexcel specification for both GCSE and A Level as well as AQA for GCSE. If tutoring at GCSE or A Level I will ensure to familiarise myself with both your specific specification and examination needs to assure progress that meets the needs of your exam board.

Alongside specific geographical content I aim to help each student through the process of examinations to promote active and efficient revision alongside minimising the stress levels of the student as I believe the mental wellbeing of the student plays a pivotal role in how they tackle an exam and ultimately the outcome of the examinations.

In the first session with the student, I ask them to complete a 'learning styles' test which provides me with an understanding of how the student would best learn whether this is through visual, auditory or kinaesthetic methods or with a mixed approach. Visual learners find it easier to learn if the information is presented in a way that they can see it and where they use their eyes to learn. Auditory learners will learn best by hearing and using their ears. Finally, kinaesthetic learners tend to learn best where there is a physical sensation, such as movement, touch or a feeling such as moulding landforms. It is therefore important that teaching is done in a way to suit the individual students needs, one-to-one tuition allows for this whereas in a typical classroom setting this is often difficult with some 30 children to cater for.
