My name is Jo and I have been a Science Teacher for the past thirteen years. This year I am taking a year out to study for an MSc in Genomic Medicine. One of my favourite parts of teaching is supporting students individually to develop their knowledge and understanding, allowing them to meet the targets that they set themselves. I am hoping that I can continue to do this over the coming year through tutoring.
I am a qualified science teacher with over 12 years' experience of teaching science to GCSE and Biology to A-level. I have also coordinated the A-level Biology curriculum at a school for several years.
I have taught students of a range of abilities and needs including students with Autism. I am always keen to personalise my teaching to meet the learner's needs, allowing them to access the curriculum in a way that suits their learning style.
I really enjoying helping my students to gain confidence in Science and to challenge themselves to achieve the best that they can. I find that approaching sessions with a patient, friendly and positive manner helps students to relax and feel safe to approach topics and tasks that they usually find difficult.
In my sessions, I am keen to help students to understand not only individual topics, but how each topic links to others that they have learnt. I think this is essential if a student is to attain the highest grades.
I realise that each student is an individual so I believe that it is important that I work with them to identify their areas for development and help them to build their knowledge and understanding. I use a variety of strategies including developing revision cards, exam question practise and directing students to online resources. I hope that through doing this I can help the student to develop as an independent learner, preparing them for future study.
