I am a qualified secondary school teacher offering Spanish/English language tuition. I have 20 years of teaching experience, 12 years of translating experience, lived in Spain for 16 years, am fluent in Castilian Spanish and expert in Spanish grammar. I teach all levels and abilities: primary, secondary, A Level, degree level or Spanish for adults. I have taught a vast range of age groups, from 2 to 81 years, my clients from all backgrounds. I understand perfectly what mistakes are likely to be made & why by both English and Spanish pupils, due to my extensive knowledge of both languages. Furthermore, I have in-depth knowledge of the Spanish culture, people & traditions, which I incorporate into my tutoring.
I know exactly what it feels like to be a language learner; I know what communication problems one can face in a foreign country, having had to do so myself in Spain and France, and I believe this valuable experience and the knowledge I have gained over the years contribute greatly to my teaching abilities and understanding of students’ needs, whatever they may be.
My teaching experience has included teaching:
• Toddlers of two years
• Primary school children of four years and over
• Secondary school children
• High school pupils
• University students
• Company directors, business people, teachers, doctors, engineers and other professionals
• Retired people
I have taught Spanish and French in four secondary schools in Surrey and Hampshire at KS3, KS4 and A-level.
I cater for the needs of beginners, intermediate or advanced students, children and adults, and English or Spanish students. I concentrate on the four main skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening but will focus on the particular needs of each individual student. I am able to prepare students for any level of Spanish that they wish to reach: primary, secondary – GCSE, A Level, university level or Spanish for adults.
My students’ satisfaction and progress take top priority. I always ensure they learn at their own pace (and I insist that if students want to visit me in groups, they must have more or less the same level of ability) and I use material and methods that they are happy with. I always cater for everyone’s personal needs and preferences.
Students can learn on a one-to-one basis with me, which tends to be the most effective way to learn. However, if they prefer to learn with other students, such as friends, classmates or work colleagues, I teach groups of up to four people. Group work is useful for role-play and enjoyable for students. As my groups are small, each student will still receive a large amount of individual attention and will have plenty of opportunities to take part in listening and speaking exercises.
In my first class with a new student, I will assess the student’s language level, what they already know and what they need or want to learn, according to the curriculum they are focusing on or their personal preferences. I use a variety of different resources in my teaching and prepare my classes based around what students need to learn – for example, if the student attends school, we will refer to the text books they are currently following and I will prepare other material of a similar standard – and their own individual strengths and weaknesses, whether they be grammar, conversation, pronunciation or listening practice.
I am passionate about teaching, languages and the written word and I know this comes across in my classes. This means my students gain confidence and progress quickly. I am always ready to give my students a little extra push if I think their learning abilities allow it – but only if they are completely happy for me to do so. I always make sure my students feel relaxed and at ease and I constantly encourage and praise them and make sure they always feel motivated. I have found that my students always make fast progress in my classes, whatever their level, and many have commented on how quickly and easily they have learnt the language with me compared to classes with other teachers.
I am friendly, positive, encouraging and very patient and I have received many compliments over the years from my students, the most common one being how clearly I explain everything and how simple and easy I make the most challenging grammar point.
