Having developed a love for Maths through my school education, it felt very natural for me to complete a Post Graduate Certificate of Education after completing my BA Hons in Mathematics at the University of Glasgow. I having been teaching in the classroom since 2002 and have a passion for helping and inspiring a love for Mathematics in pupils of all ability ranges. Having taken a step down from a highly rewarding Head of Department role at a very large and successful comprehensive in Surrey to work as a part-time teacher and support the needs of my young family; I have decided to tutor once again to support pupils progress and attainment as they embark upon the stressful process of public examinations. I pride myself with my up-to-date knowledge of maths pedagogy and also recent changes to Mathematics specifications. I have been an Examiner with AQA for over 10 years, marking linear and modular GCSE specifications and commenting on working mark schemes; so have a sound insight into common pupil misconceptions and the application of method, knowledge and accuracy marks in examinations.
I have been teaching pupils from age 11 to 18 since graduating from my PGCE in 2002. Throughout my career, I have taught AQA and Edexcel GCSE specifications, Edexcel Additional maths and AQA level 2 certificate in Further Maths. I am experienced in teaching A-level Pure Mathematics C1 - C4 and Mechanics and Statistics. I also am teaching the new Specification A-level Mathematics which starts in September 2017, having studied and planned for the changes to the course. I am proud of the accomplishments of the pupils in my classes who regularly achieve on or above target at GCSE and A-level. My past role as Head of Department has given me vast insight into pupil performance across cohorts and ability levels, taking into account SEN and looking carefully into common misconceptions in pupil understanding both at GCSE and A-level.
Through my experience, both in the curriculum and pastoral areas of education over the last 15 years, I feel I have an understanding of how to communicate with young people and am approachable. I think maths achievement is very closely related to confidence and perceived ability; it is important to bolster confidence and develop resilience and risk taking to be successful. My approach will check for sound understanding of key skills that underpin mathematical concepts through diagnostic tests ( past exam questions mainly) and intervention to correct any misconceptions. Developing sound exam technique through practice and develop strategies to break down more challenging problems in a methodical way, building resilience and problem solving techniques that will support achievement in exams. Homework will be set each week and marked together (or sometimes I will take it away to assess) developing correct solutions and targeting problems immediately.
