Personal Description:

I have recently graduated with a First Class Degree in Advanced Molecular Biology from University College London looking to tutor students between the ages of 8-18 in the subjects of Biology and Chemistry. I am also very keen on helping 18 year olds with help on applying for universities and interview practice.

I have been a private tutor for 3 years now, teaching science primarily at GCSE and A Level.

I am an enthusiastic teacher who wishes to spread their enjoyment and passion for science.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching for a long time, and I have been working as a paid tutor for three years. Below are a list of my experiences.

Whilst still at school, I tutored one child of eight during the Academic year of 2012/2013 who had severe difficulties reading, writing, and generally interacting with classmates. Following this, I began my work as a private tutor to students between the ages of 16-21 and since I have tutored around 25 students. I worked for a tutoring company and with them hosted Science Booster Revision days during the holidays for exams students.

I taught English in Orphanages in Africa in the summer of 2015 and to the women of Fort Kochi in Kerala, India in the summer of 2016.

Tutoring Approach:

Hello, I’m Jess and I’m a London-based science tutor. I teach the sciences from +11 to GCSE/IGCSE level, as well as Biology and Chemistry at AS, A level, and IB. I also assist with applications and interview preparation to study Medicine at University as well as other general Personal Statement help. I can teach both face-to-face for Londoners and over Skype for country-dwellers! I have a First Class Degree in Molecular Biology from UCL and I am currently studying Global Health and Development at UCL and the Tropical Education Network Universities.

Central to my work is putting the life and passion back into the sciences. Confidence is held at the heart of my lessons as I encourage students to be engaged with the material and empowered to achieve the results they desire.

Years of experience and access to incredible learning and teaching facilities at University College London (UCL) has enabled me to evolve and perfect my tutoring technique in lessons. In particular, my experience at UCL lead to a module selection orientated around the biochemistry of the brain, and the psychology of memory. These teachings have been heavily incorporated into my own teaching technique.

My approach to tutoring has developed over the past 3 years. When I started tutoring classes were orientated solely around the lesson at hand. Now my work takes a far more conscientious approach with regular assessment, re-evaluation, and goal-setting. I work closely with both students and their parents. Together we can gauge expectations and generate our ‘game-plan’ for academic success. Working as a team enables the revision techniques taught in class to be encouraged at the home. Holding each member of the team accountable for their actions lays the foundations for an easy path to success.

The majority of our ‘success’ is brewed in the classroom. Here I can impart my knowledge of how to achieve the top marks without spending hours crying over textbooks. Once the desired results have been achieved I can help your child further in their applications to University. My own experience with University applications is threefold, having applied for both a BSc, an MBBS (medicine) and a MSc. My applications were aided with hours of being the tutee for once, all of which has allowed me to get a grasp on what the top Universities are after.
