Information About Jess - Edinburgh tutor - (13 reviews)
This is how 2 referees rated Jess:
I am an English PhD student at the University of St Andrews, although I have been based in Edinburgh for nearly 10 years. I hold previous degrees in English and Scottish Literature from the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews, and returned to study in 2015 after several years working for arts organisations in Edinburgh. I have taught in schools and universities as well as abroad and at UK summer schools, and regularly run workshops for festivals and community organisations. I currently work part-time at the Glasgow Women's Library and run regular reading groups in Edinburgh and Perth.
I have tutored students from a variety of backgrounds and from primary up to postgraduate level, helping them to develop the core skills required for English, such as textual analysis, essay-writing, creative writing and close reading. English tuition is a great opportunity to develop skills which are transferable to many other subject areas, and I am familiar with a broad range of syllabuses, including SQA (National 4, 5, Higher), GCSE/A Level and International Baccalaureate, as well as university level programmes. I have helped students prepare for university applications and with academic writing in a range of disciplines including economics, social work, psychology, geography, nursing and illustration.
My approach to tutoring is to foster engagement and enjoyment of the subject, whilst keeping a close focus on the school or university syllabus. I always tailor sessions towards the areas in which each individual requires support, and I enjoy designing projects in collaboration with students to match their interests. One-to-one support is a fantastic opportunity to nurture a positive attitude towards reading and writing, enable students to grow in confidence and become more independent in their work. I am flexible and communicative, and keen to develop positive, supportive relationships with the families I work with.
‘Jess provided high quality support and has helped to target problem areas… by sharing her knowledge and expertise in the subject’ – Parent
‘Jess was always well-prepared, resourceful and varied in her approach… and established a friendly rapport immediately which enabled her to teach very effectively. She assessed pupil’s needs quickly and positively… she went beyond brief in English to help’ – Parent
‘(Student) returned after each session saying that he was learning more with one to one than he was in the class… he felt at ease with you, which for a teenage boy tells a good story’ - Parent
‘Jess’s teaching was of a very high standard. She was incredibly effective not just in increasing (student’s) awareness of the set texts that he was studying and the required close reading techniques, but also in listening and encouraging him to develop his own thoughts’ – Parent
