I have been an English teacher for nine years, and offer individually tailored tutorials during term time. I have a BA and a Masters in English, I used to be a copywriter and have just finished my third novel. I have two children, the oldest of whom achieved three A*s at Thomas Hardye and is going to read English at Cambridge. The youngest has finally learnt that the harder he works, the better he'll do. I am very interested in looking at ways of best communicating with children in order to help them learn; teaching them that their brain is a muscle which grows as they exercise it.
I am a fully qualified teacher. For five years I taught English GCSE and Media Studies A' Level in a secondary school in Sussex. After a decade's break I did some extensive re-training, during which time I taught adults with special educational needs. I now tutor students from Year 7 onwards. Nb: it's often good to start lessons before the actual GCSE course begins, for it's less restrictive in terms of the work we cover which is great for building confidence.
When I re-trained I had to take my Maths GCSE. So I know just how it feels to be a struggling student!
I have extensively researched the new 9 -1 English Language GCSE, achieving excellent pass rates as I understand the challenges it presents to students. I know the Edexcel, AQA and OCR syllabuses. Last year I had great success with students who were struggling in their final term of English - helping one student move from a 3 to a 6.
I love teaching in ways that enable the student to both enjoy and understand the work they're doing; and my greatest joy is seeing students develop a genuine love of reading. Teaching works best, I believe, when you make it fun.
