Personal Description:

I am a hard working individual who puts in a lot of effort when I am passionate about something; and Psychology is a subject I am very passionate about. I have been working at a charity for the past year alongside my studies in which I am required work with children who have disabilities. This role has required me to work with some very challenging children and also young adults with varying degrees of disabilities and mental health conditions; the work is very exhausting at times as you are required to give your complete attention and 100% effort to the children as they can be very demanding and require a lot of support. Often some of the children who suffer from the more severe disabilities will require physical support too, for example this may include supporting those who have mobility difficulties so will either require a wheelchair or assistance by holding onto their carer. I have really enjoyed working here as it is an area which I am very interested in; I am working towards becoming a Clinical Psychologist in the future because mental health is something that fascinates me. I hope to achieve a degree in Psychology Bsc and continue onto postgraduate as well. I was recently awarded two certificates from the charity and my University in recognition of my hard work and volunteering services. I have done much more work experience before attending university; for example I worked as a teaching assistant with two different junior schools, a nursery and I also worked with an after-school play scheme. I have also worked as a mentor for GCSE students, and I was also a well-being ambassador for a class of year 7 students. So I do have a lot of experience working with youth in schools; I feel that due to my own personality and characteristics, and experience with youth and young children, I am very confident in working with them and feel that I am able to put them at ease by engaging with them in an informal way yet at the same time exerting authority when needed. I am able to create a comfortable and friendly atmosphere and encourage them to communicate with me at a personal level in order to help them to feel relaxed and confident with me; this therefore creates an easier working environment for myself and the children as I have found that when they see you as a friend they are more likely to approach you and put their trust in you. However I have also found that when needed it is important to show your authority in order to maintain the respect and to ensure they will follow instruction. I feel that I am a very caring person and I am patient with youth, I am also highly enthusiastic and am able to motivate young children and encourage their self-confidence.

Tutoring Experience:

GCSE Tutor
Year 7 ambassador
Carer for disabled children (involves helping with their learning and social skills)
Teaching Assistant at two different junior schools (years 3 to 6) (included giving one-to-one assistance for those who required extra support)

Tutoring Approach:

Using the same methods taught in primary and secondary school, I will offer the child support and encouragement, and enhance their understanding in the chosen topic area. I will aim to guide the child to reach the answers of their given tasks on their own terms in order to ensure that they fully understand the tasks set to them. I can support the child with revision, practicing skills, and homework help.
