I am a FULLY QUALIFIED Mathematics teacher experienced in teaching in a Scottish Secondary School. I have a thorough understanding of the curriculum and standards and a deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Mathematics. I build strong rapport with my students and approach each lesson with a clear objective.
Through the many pupils and students I have taught I am fully aware of the difficulties that can be experienced in understanding various ideas and concepts. I am patient and very willing to explain ideas thoroughly and simply.
I have more than 6 year experience of working with children and young people from primary school and upper classes. I completed my PGDE from University of Strathclyde and have been teaching at secondary schools in North Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire councils.
I have been tutoring for the last 6 years. I tutor at all Secondary School levels - First/Second Year, National 3, 4 and 5 and Higher. I am also happy to work with pupils in Primary 7.
I have also tutored pupils doing International Baccalaureate previously and hence am fully aware of the IB curriculum as well.
I have taken Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) courses relating to exam marking as a teacher. I am therefore confident about the standards expected of pupils being presented for national exams.
I would normally ask pupils to bring, to the first tutoring session, some work they have recently completed at school. I would also ask if there were any particular topics that he/she would like us to work on. This normally gives us a good starting point.
I like to get to know my pupils' hobbies, interests and aspirations for the future. Knowing this often helps me to make my teaching more relevant. We can try to work on examples set in a context where the pupil is confident and familiar.
Maths is perceived as challenging subject, my aim is to remove this perception and welcome these as something we are working with in every day of our lives. I will always have work prepared for each session however the topic or example on which the pupil would like to work will always take priority. I feel it is important that the pupil leaves a session feeling that any particular difficulty has been resolved.
During each session I will also try to revise several topics with some short questions. Any difficulties encountered during this revision exercise may provide topics for study at future sessions.
I will set homework tasks. Each pupil is an individual and the amount of homework will be appropriate for them.

There have been occasions when I have taught topics to pupils before they have been introduced at school. Experience suggests this can be very beneficial.
I will keep parents updated on progress. If it is not possible to chat at the end of the session then we can communicate via email, telephone or text.
Ultimately I aim to raise pupils' self confidence and enjoyment of mathematics. When this is accomplished an increase in motivation and achievement in school normally follows.
