I was a primary school teaching assistant for 6 years and have a bachelor's degree in English Literature & Journalism and News Media. I achieved two A grades and an A* grade at A-levels and six A grades, two B grades and 3 C grades at GCSE. I am passionate about working with children, helping them to find new and interesting ways to learn. I am friendly, enthusiastic and patient and believe every child is a unique individual and should be treated as such.
As a teaching assistant, I worked with children one-on-one or in small, focused group. This included helping children who need to work at a slightly slower pace or taking children who understand the lesson well and giving them more in-depth work.
I have also volunteered with teenagers in the past, helping them to manage their homework load, offering support during difficult times and helping to prepare them for exams. Also on a voluntary basis, I have supported students struggling with essays up to a university level.
I believe each child needs a tutoring experience tailored to how they best learn. If a child is struggling to understand something, that does not mean they are incapable of getting it - the way it is being taught simply needs to be adjusted. I think anyone can learn anything, no matter what pace they work at or how long it takes to get them there. Learning should be a fun, interesting and stress-free experience for a child.
I will plan sessions based on the level and needs of the the child and come prepared. This could include using resources such as worksheets, educational games, flashcards and other study tools. Depending on the age of the child, we could use practise exam papers or essay questions to help prepare a child for the real thing. If a parent or child has any suggestions on how to structure the sessions or what resources they would prefer to use, this can of course be discussed ahead of time and integrated into the session.
I believe online resources, such as BBC bitesize, can help children practise maths, English and science skills in their own time and will show them how to get the most out of these resources.
