I am currently a supply teacher in Plymouth. I have worked in schools recently doing pastoral work and as a teaching assistant, working in the classroom and also running intervention groups. I am currently on the management committee of a playschool where I am the OFSTED nominated person so am known to OFSTED and have a current DBS certificate. I was a registered child minder and my house was registered with OFSTED. I am Chair of Governors at my children's school. I also help to run a youth group.
I qualified from Marjons in 1999 and after supply teaching in several schools in Plymouth I moved to Kent to teach in a school in Essex. There I mainly taught Year 1 but I also taught SAT's booster classes to Year 6 pupils. Since leaving to have my first child I have privately taught both Key Stage 1 and 2 children as well as children with English as a second language. I have taught children in preparation for the 11+ and most have successfully got into grammar school. I am currently Chair of Governors at my children's school and maintain my knowledge of current teaching practices by regularly attending training courses. I also work in a pre-school so am familiar with the EYFS. My son has been diagnosed with dyslexia so I have been investigating a variety of different teaching techniques and styles to help him, he is also on the most able register at Secondary school so have experience extending children who are able.
I feel that children thrive on positive praise and encouragement. They need to believe they can do it to succeed. I always assess the children first to see their needs and learning styles before deciding on a program of study. I always give an honest analysis of where I feel the child is and what needs to be done for them to achieve their full potential. Small achievable tasks mixed with more challenging activities will give the child a sense of achievement as well as reaching their full potential.
