Janice

I did my BSc in physiology and did modules in Chemistry and Physics as additional subjects at undergraduate level. I completed 2 years of my PhD in neurophysiology, postponed my final year due to pregnancy problems. With the start of my family I tutored at 6th form college evening classes. Then at 6th form, latterly as an SEN deaf support officer for sciences tutoring in Biology Chemistry and Physics Environmental Sciences at A Level. I took City and Guilds qualifications in teaching.
During this time I also did my Diploma in Theology as a P/T student which gave me insight and skills in time management and pastoral care. Working and studying under these circumstances has been invaluable in working with students experiencing different and stressful circumstances such as imposed by COVID conditions.

Tutoring Experience

I have tutored privately for 25 plus years, and joined the staff at Haywards Heath College as a support officer and LSA for sciences. I then was employed as a tutor in science running small group sessions for students requiring study skills, revision sessions and explanatory support. I dual taught in A level Biology and taught experimental design and techniques in lab in Chemistry. I covered for colleagues in Biology and Chemistry for two terms.
I also tutored in GCSE science and A level at Bartholomews,Tutorial college in Brighton preparing students for examinations for 8 years.
I have had students from Haywards Heath college, Worth Abbey, St Paul's, Brighton College ,Ardingly Lewes Grammar Oathall Warden Park, Burgess Hill School for Girls and have supported a student through first year undergraduate Chemistry and Physiology.

Tutoring Approach

I use discussion and assessment to understand student misconceptions and to find out particular areas of difficulty. I use retrieval practice to reinforce work done in previous lessons, and at GCSE BEST practice as formative assessment. Past paper questions are interleaved in the lesson. I use PPT which can be sent to students to reinforce information so that we can discuss in a socrative way the content. I use animations, lab simulations to emphasise practicals. To emphasise scientific literacy and use of correct technical terms I use comprehension style projects using articles from New Scientist. I am taking a course on use of Doodly a cartoon animation method to reinforce knowledge and understanding.
Continual assessment verbal reasoning and discussion is integrated within the lesson. I teach Exam technique and decoding questions in relation to the syllabus, and posing unusual scenarios to challenge and extend.
