Personal Description:

In my mid sixties, having returned to teaching when my own child was at school, after a diverse and interesting career as a writer and script editor for film, TV and theatre. I enjoy cultural activities such as theatre, concerts and films. I frequently have my head in a book and have to limit the amount of time I spend reading, both fiction and the newspapers. I play piano, having taken it up on retirement, and I make silver jewellery, both as a hobby and for commissions. I continue to write plays for the stage and to have them produced, my last, 'The Engineer's Corset,' at The Redgrave Theatre, Bristol, in 2015. I enjoy being alert to the World and to opportunities to learn new things so am involved both with teaching and being taught.

Tutoring Experience:

My teaching career started at a comprehensive school in Manchester, where I taught a range of subjects including English, drama and hockey. This was prior to the introduction of the National curriculum but, on my return to teaching, in 1995, I was trained as a yr 10 and 11 English teacher at Brent PRU and, since then have been taught throughout the range of requirements, to the current 1-9 requirements of the GCSE, iGCSE, and of A/S and A level English literature and language requirements, teaching in community schools such as Holmer Green, Bucks, and grammar schools, such as Chesham Grammar. I have also taught students from all schools in South Bucks and the Chilterns for home tuition and am secure in my knowledge of the curricula and assessment objectives for AQA, OCR, Edexcel and Cambridge iGCSE and for AQA and OCR English language and literature A/S & A level examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

In order to achieve the best with students I make an initial assessment based on work done, by asking to read a piece of work with which the student is pleased and something which the student feels has not gained them a good mark, and ascertain the ways in which the student thinks and communicates through writing, and responds to the analysis of language in English study. The lessons are planned to concentrate on an aspect of the assessment objectives, to teach strategies to achieve at their best, to practise achieving with the strategy, and to retain the information, and practise this strategy. With the study of literature a thorough knowledge of the plot and narrative starts an exploration of language, form and structure, to which the student and I return, looking at different forms of questions, and the answers to be given for them, with either a spoken or written plan achieved as frequently as possible. The lessons are largely discursive, with a limited amount of written work by the student, but with some reading in each lesson, as the texts for the English language GCSE papers are sophisticated, and require confident reading from the students. My intention id to work from the student's strengths in English, developing confidence, both analytical and sensitive, encouraging techniques which start from finding the obvious answer and making it effective through complying to the assessment objectives for it.
