Personal Description:

I hold a 2:1 bachelor's degree in English and Irish Studies (Joint Honours) from Liverpool University, in which I excelled in Victorian and Irish Modernist literature. I currently work as an Instructional Designer, specialising in online training courses. I am gaining experience in schools in preparation for teacher training. I have experience of coaching fellow students at university in some of the finer points of essay planning, researching and writing, with the aim of helping them to structure and polish their creative and analytical ideas to get the best grades. I will teach any age range up to undergraduate level.

Tutoring Experience:

I am an experienced instructional designer, which involves discussing the aims, outcomes and feedback with course providers and students. I've worked on a wide variety of courses, from business-focused to academic, and I have a great deal of experience in lesson planning and tailored learning. When I was at university, I helped some of the struggling students learn how to structure and research their essays, and how to develop the starting point of an essay question into a high quality academic piece of work.

Tutoring Approach:

I first discuss with the student where he or she is up to in their studies, and what are their aims for the tutoring sessions. I will ask the student for a list of the set texts and other information about their course of study - such as the level (e.g. Key Stage, GCSE) and whether the want help towards a specific qualification or more general help with the subject overall. I will ascertain whether he or she feels they are ahead or behind in their studies, and whether there are any specific aspects of the work with which they feel they need help. I then plan the first two or three lessons, which will involve discussing the text or texts, potential exam or coursework questions, the themes of the text, and, depending on the age, abilities, and aims of the student, some of the more in-depth aspects that will gain the student higher marks - such as author motivation, character analysis, and historical and social influence and attitudes.
