I have academic qualifications to MA level in Art practice and theory and a postgraduate teaching certificate (PG Cert in teaching in Higher and Adult Education Level 7) and experience in the field of teaching and support in a variety of settings and at a range of levels. I am in my mid fifties with a calm and friendly outlook.

Tutoring Experience

I have had lecturer posts in Art & Design and Alternative Curriculum in Further Education, teaching and support roles in special schools in the compulsory education sector, and experience working as a tutor on a consultancy basis with schools, Children's Services/ the Virtual School and tuition agencies. The support has included help with particular programmes of study, maths and English as part of the National Curriculum, as well as help with basic skills such as fluency in reading and improvement of maths at a basic level.
I have recently been working as a tutor under the National Tutoring Scheme.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to teaching is a responsive one. I am very patient, calm and friendly and have experience of working flexibly with students to suit their needs. Throughout my teaching and support work I have always focused on creating a learning environment that is relaxed and informal, but that is focused on students' understanding of concepts and making progress towards their goals.

Jane tutored my daughter in GCSE Mathematics for around a year. She did a wonderful job with helping to boost her confidence levels in this subject which was not her favourite. She was always so patient and kind. Leah was very anxious about Maths and Jane helped to address this and as she improved she became less anxious. Jane set Leah homework after every session which they would look at and mark together. Jane focused on preparing Leah for the exam by setting past papers for Leah to work through. I was impressed with Janes dedication as she would often stay a little later with Leah if they were really getting into a subject. Jane was flexible with lessons often accommodating moving the session if we had other engagements and adding more lessons a week moving closer to the exams. I am happy to report that with Janes tutoring Leah passed her maths GCSE which she needed to continue with her college courses.
