Personal Description:

Hi, my name is Jamie, I'm 25, and I am currently studying a postgraduate degree in Medicine at UCL. I previously graduated from Trinity College Cambridge with a degree in Natural Sciences. Prior to this I was an academic scholar at Eton College. Whilst at Eton I was one of two boys in the year shortlisted and interviewed for the position of headboy, as well as being head of my boarding house (in charge of 50 boys), both a general and academic prefect as well as president of the Scientific Society. I'm a keen sportsman and love both playing and following a number of different sports. Whilst at uni I played for my college's football and tennis 1st teams, as well as giving a couple of the more niche sports like mixed netball and competitive pool a go! I'm also a big fan of skiing, sailing, cycling and keeping fit. I enjoy playing the drums and am a member of a band with a group of friends from Trinity.

Tutoring Experience:

Tutoring students from age 5-18 in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, both privately and via the agency Blue Tutors, where I have gained over 400 hours of experience since joining in September 2014.
Class room teaching at a private out-of-hours school (Owl Education)
Experience as a primary school teaching assistant for one year (weekly)

"He is a wonderful and responsible tutor. My son had fun with him during the lessons, and he explained things to him very well. He took time outside of the tutorials to check his work. I am happy to recommend him to other parents"- Mrs C. (Maida Vale, 01/15)

Tutoring Approach:

I've been fortunate enough to have been tutoring since the age of 13, when I was a pupil at Colet Court- ever since that age I've relished the challenge of helping others to understand difficult concepts and ideas. Whatever the concept that I'm helping a student to grasp, I've no doubt been there myself and have always found it extremely helpful and rewarding to walk a student through the same steps I originally took to come to understand a tricky concept. Whilst the greatest enjoyment I get from tutoring is in helping to encourage students to further their interest in areas outside of the syllabus (these are invariably the most interesting!), I appreciate that the public exam system can be a bit of a game, a game which more often involves working out what the examiner wants you to write rather than what is necessarily a good answer. It is a game that I have always been acutely (and somewhat resentfully!) aware of, but which awareness nevertheless helped me to achieve the Salters' Institute Prize for obtaining the 3rd highest Biology A level score in the country, as well as resulting in my never dropping a grade in any public exam taken to date (please see below). Whilst I'm aware (and hope!) that many students that undertake tutoring are looking for more than just a fast-track solution to better grades, exam scores are inevitably the final output of your efforts over the year. Of course a student should therefore want to aim for the best score possible, through both ensuring a thorough understanding of the material as well as an exam-savvy approach, and in both these regards I can hopefully be of help.
