I am a secondary school teacher from Sheffield, recently moved to Stoke, with a large body of knowledge and a passion for the sciences. I am primarily a physics and biology specialist.
I currently teach KS4 Biology and Physics and AS/A2 Biology full time and have a large body of experience tutoring pupils in these topics with great success.
I have experience teaching a range of GCSE courses in science and am actively preparing my teaching for the forthcoming linear exam series. This has meant spending time with various representatives from exam boards to gain knowledge of the new curriculum and I have been integral to the development of my school's own curriculum giving me a large body of knowledge to work with. This has also meant I have experience with a broad range of abilities and attitudes and am familiar with the misconceptions students will make.
Additionally, I am an examiner for the GCSE science series and have been for 4 years giving me detailed knowledge of grading of exam papers and what is expected from pupils.
I also have experience tutoring for A level courses, including the new specifications. I have been responsible for the setting up and providing the delivery of my college's A2 Biology course and as such have a detailed knowledge of the curriculum and the expectations the exam boards have with their new specifications. With my own degree being in Biology I can offer a detailed knowledge to supplement the curriculum which is invaluable for pupils aiming for the highest grades at A2.
I have a range of experience tutoring for A level biology and GCSE mathematics, biology, physics and chemistry for different ability pupils and have been able to develop a range of strategies using up to date pedagogy to supplement the learning of my pupils.
I believe strongly in an individual approach to pupil learning and tailor my practice to suit the situation. I find talking through areas of weakness to be effective, as conversation offers opportunities to ask questions and review concepts in a way pupils can engage with. Combining this with practice exam situations provides a method whereby pupils can gain a thorough understanding of a topic and express this in a manner for exam success.
As a matter of professionalism I keep myself up to date with the latest teaching practices and pedagogy. The most valuable tool to improvement and learning is feedback. I will provide this through low-stakes quizzing/questioning and also through exam practice to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of a pupil and provide relevant, bespoke feedback that can be acted upon.
