James offers a FREE first / introductory lesson!
In July 2013, I graduated from the University of Warwick with a Master of Mathematics. More recently, I completed my PGCE at the University of Oxford and taught maths to classes of all year groups in an Outstanding secondary school in North London.
I’ve always had a real passion for maths and a strong interest in helping others. I believe the subject is often misunderstood and I find it a great pleasure when students have that ‘aha’ moment when they grasp a new idea and start to enjoy learning.
Outside of tutoring, I have a strong interest in entrepreneurship, cricket, socialising with friends, comedy TV shows and running.
LONG TERM TUTORING
I have over 400 hours of one-to-one tutoring experience, teaching GCSE Maths and Statistics, A-Level Maths, and A Level Further Maths. I have accumulated these hours with a small number of students because I believe it is crucial to build excellent relationships with them and their families.
Additionally, I work hard to tailor tuition to suit the individual needs of each student. For example, by covering particular topics that they might be having trouble with at school.

A PLAN FOR EACH STUDENT
For each new student, I like to begin with an initial assessment to develop a bespoke scheme of work. We then use the scheme of work to keep track of lessons taught, fill in any background knowledge gaps, identify follow-up lessons, and plan revision.
LEARN BY DOING
My approach is very practise focused. When introducing a new idea, I give manageable, bite-sized instructions and a clear method. The questions that follow are carefully designed to gradually increase in difficulty, where the differences between individual questions are almost unnoticeable, but the first and last are very different. A bit like climbing a ladder, where the steps are not too far apart. At the end of each lesson, I ask the students to look back at the first question and they are often amazed when they compare it to what they can do at the end.
I believe the many schools teach their students to approach the exam in the wrong way, where it is viewed as an object of fear and danger. I take the opposite view, encouraging my students that the exam is just an opportunity to show the examiner what they can do without any distractions. This change in mindset boosts confidence, inspires students to work harder and helps them enjoy maths more.
