Bonjour ! My name is James and I have just finished my French degree at the University of Sheffield, where I achieved a 2.1, with 'Distinction in spoken French'. Having studied the language for most of my life and having previously lived and worked in France, I would describe myself as fluent.
What’s more, I am completely familiar with the process of learning the language; I know the common trappings English speakers struggle with, and I understand and know how to overcome all the challenges that the French language can throw at learners, because I have been through them all myself!
I am not the most seasoned teacher on here, but if you’re searching for a young and enthusiastic tutor with a genuine love and knowledge for his subject, look no further. I work well with and have experience teaching all age groups, from primary age children to adults, and I can produce a DBS certificate on request. Above all, I want you to be happy and confident learning French.
À bientôt !
• 2016 – present: Private French tutor
• 2016: AS / A-Level French classroom assistant at The Sixth Form College, Farnborough
• 2013; 2015 – 2016: English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher at Mayfield Community Partnership
• 2014 – 2015: English language assistant in primary schools of the Académie d’Orléans-Tours, France
My primary aim is to instil confidence and enthusiasm in my students, developing your skills in a manner and pace which suits you. To do this, I don’t work from a textbook or follow a strict syllabus; rather, we will work together towards your personal goals, and I will teach only what we’ve agreed on in advance. I always provide constructive feedback and encourage questions and student participation as much as possible.
Whether you’re a student about to sit exams, or want to brush up on your French for travel or work purposes, and whatever your current level, I know that no two students are alike and that everyone has their own learning style. To this end, I am completely flexible and accommodating in my teaching style, although I do enjoy using multimedia resources and always try to put language-learning into a real world context. Although I rarely give formal homework, I recommend and encourage regular practice between sessions, in order to make the most of our time together and to facilitate your own progress.
