Professional, thoughtful and enthusiastic tutor in English Literature and Philosophy. I have extensive academic experience in various fields as certified by my first class bachelors (Philosophy and Literature) and master's (English Literature), alongside my Masters in Fine Arts degree, and current doctoral study (both in writing) – all at the University of Warwick. Learning has really been one of the great joys of my life, and what motivates me as a tutor is the opportunity to be able to inspire that in others, in whatever way I can.
I am employed as an Academic Writing Tutor at Coventry University within the Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) to assist under- and postgraduate students, from a wide range of disciplines. I am also engaged as a lecturer by the university, and am an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
In addition, I have tutored several students via First Tutors in Philosophy, English Literature and English Language for both GCSE and A Level qualifications. During my BA, I was also engaged as a student mentor charged with giving assistance, both academic and practical to new undergraduates. My experience with students – regardless of whether they are revising for a mock GSCE exam or finalising a draft of their master’s dissertation – has allowed me to understand how differently every individual learns, highlighting how important it is to tailor one’s approach to every learner.
Every student is different, so my approach will heavily depend on you, where you are in your learning, and how you learn best. In general, I think the best way of learning is through discussion and dialogue. I aim to help you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and see how we can work with them. If there's a novel you're reading, or a play or poem, I'll read it too, if I haven't already. If there are essay skills that want testing, I'll go through your writing to see where you can improve. If you want help in bridging the gap between A Level and university level, we can assemble a reading list for discussion over a series of weeks. If you’re gearing up for some coursework or an exam, I will think through your syllabus to tailor our sessions to the assessment, while also giving you the wider context and background that I can supply through my academic training.
In terms of practicalities, while open to travelling to you, travelling to me is preferred, as I don’t have access to a car. I’m also open to meeting at another location, such as a cafe. When contacting me for availability, if you also include information about the literature you are/will be studying (if relevant), that is always very helpful.
