James

Exeter Tutor

I am 23 year old, male currently resident in Exeter. I have worked extensively in teaching since completing a history degree, and am currently looking for tutoring work to supplement my income before planning to complete a masters degree in the coming year. In my spare time, I enjoy writing, drawing and hiking across Devonshire scenery.

Tutoring Experience

I have extensive experience of working with schools, having worked in this area (either officially or in a volunteer capacity) since I was 17. This has seen me working with a wide range of children of diffrent age groups and abilities ranging from first year reception children to years 9 and 10 in secondary schools. Most recently I have been undertaking a teacher training course which as even me being put on placement at various schools round Devon. I am as a result familiar with working with children and the many challenges (and solutions to those challenges) that accompany it.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that tutoring functions best when it is tailored to the particular needs of the child in question and the circumstances in which it is being carried out. For shorter term or one off sessions, my principle approach is to establish what it is that the child needs to achieve and help them work towards the goal. Whether that is gaining an understanding of a particular mathematical skill or gaining confidence in themselves and their own ideas. For more long term commissions I believe that it is important for a tutor to help their pupil gain enthusiasm for as well as knowledge about a subject, teaching a child some piece of knowledge is relatively straight forward, but sharing with them an enthusiasm for a subject is what will ensure that knowledge takes on meaning and that they are motivated to go in search of more. For this to be achieved establishing a good relationship between tutor and child is paramount. Without this communicating enthusiasm is near impossible, so especially with older students. I consider that getting to know my pupil sharing interests and ideas and helping them see how these can find expression in the subject in question is an important (arguably vital) component of the tutoring process.
