Personal Description:

I’m James and I’m an MA Management and International Relations student at the University of St Andrews. I also study History . I’m extremely passionate about my subject and those that I studied at A-Level. I have tutored on and off over the last few years and see great satisfaction in helping students realise and gain their full potential. Success stories have included taking one individual from a D/E grade in their mock to gaining an A at GCSE. I’m enthusiastic, driven and genuinely want to help students from all backgrounds do better so that they can have the best opportunities moving forward. I have run highly successful revision sessions in both History and Business which saw attendees grades increase.

I can recognise from my own education that teachers can gloss over and move quickly through what is challenging content which is why tutoring can be so helpful in consolidating the learning beyond the classroom. I am a patient, kind and bubbly character and look forward to hearing from you so that we can get working on boosting your grades and helping you realise your potential.

My areas and expertise particularly lie in Leadership, Motivation and Management as well as American History 1770 - present in addition to British and US politics. I also have a strong understanding and awareness of the Stuart period 1600-1660.

I work flexible hours and always look to meet your requirements.

I accept cash and card payments.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored for over 2 years now and have great successes. I am experienced in online as well as in person tutoring.

"Prior to my tutoring with James, I obtained a D in CIE AS Business. With the exceptional help from James, I obtained a high A on my January resit. James showed me how to structure my chain of arguments in a clear and concise way to hit the higher bands of marks. He and I extensively went through my D grade exam script. He showed me where I went wrong, and how to improve. James is also a dedicated tutor. He and I are in drastically different time zones. He still tutored me in socially awkward hours, which I am very grateful for. I can confidently say my growth in grade was heavily influenced by the tutoring sessions with James" - Rajiv, 18 A Level Student

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly, I would start by establishing what the student wanted out of the session so that I could plan and make sure that the time was used fully effectively. My tutorials will consolidate knowledge and content as well as looking into exam technique which is becoming ever more important. The way one writes something and what one selectively includes can be the difference between grades. My tutorials will be interactive and as visual as possible in order to keep the content interesting. I would start by establishing where the student is at and then progress to the content. Having achieved that I would look at practise papers and examples which often can bring a question, theme or idea to life and exemplify the importance of the content learned.

All of my tutorials will be rounded off with a ‘check in’ to look back on everything that has been learnt. I will tailor tutorials to the requirements of the student so that the tutorials can be fully informative and worthwhile. I also encourage on occasion post tutorial work such as past exams, mini tests or knowledge ‘refreshers’, provided by myself, which we can then talk through and reinforce learning/highlight the progress made. Ultimately, I will meet your needs to maximise your potential.
