I have been teaching Modern Languages for eleven years and love to support students (and parents!) in doing better at languages and other subjects. As a keen sportsman I recognise that motivation can be a key factor in doing well at anything and especially school subjects. I put supporting students at the heart of my private tuition.
I have experience of tutoring both adults and students at GCSE and A-Level. I teach French and Spanish to A-Level and German to GCSE. I am proud to say that all students who I have tutored in the past have exceeded their target grade. In 2011 at the first school I taught at (as Head of Spanish at Alsager School) the Spanish results I and my fellow colleague achieved were 100% A*-C and 81% A*-A and were quoted in local newspapers as 'bucking the national trend' (please see Stoke Sentinel 30 August 2011 article entitled '
Top marks as students lead the way by making grade in host of different languages' and Crewe Chronicle 31 August 2011). Since then at my current school the Lead Inspector during a recent Ofsted commented in the school's Ofsted report that in my observed lesson my teaching included, 'approaches to teaching which help students enjoy their learning and make considerable progress.' I also have a book (published in March 2015) called 'Fun Learning Activities for Modern Foreign Languages: A Complete Toolkit for Ensuring Engagement, Progress and Achievement' which teachers from other schools have commented on to say that it has greatly supported their students' progress and results.
I am proud to say that recently at the end of August in 2018 my second book on effective revision for all subjects and not just languages ('Exam Literacy') was published with an acknowledgement in the foreword by Professor Dunlosky (an international cognitive science professor) as to what I have written about can help to work.
While I am proud of these achievements, the most important thing to me is that students enjoy their learning and make exceptional progress. I have also completed a project on supporting students to learn about how to access exam material in other subjects (downloading exam papers, exam specifications, sample specifications and examiner reports). Again, as trite as this sounds, I am driven to supporting students to achieve.
I am incredibly patient and supportive of all students learning any subject. With languages (particularly at GCSE) it is important to appreciate that a lot of learning is about students' memory. I like to focus on supporting students (using some of the techniques in my book and teaching) so that their confidence is built up towards knowing and recognising vocabulary first (I have done analysis of past reading and listening papers for AQA, WJEC, OCR and Edexcel and made lists of the frequently-occuring vocabulary on past papers). I make sure that all of my best resources are shared with the students I tutor so that they are supported as best they can be. Supporting students to get the best grade that they can get while enjoying their subject is the most important thing for me.
