Jack

I am an Oxford-educated maths tutor, based in North London (between Highgate / Hampstead). I am a passionate teacher and love getting the best out of my students through building a strong rapport, by quickly learning what teaching environment enables my students to work effectively, and by sharing my knowledge in a compartmentalised, understandable way.

I am doing my job if my students are well engaged and looking forward to their sessions, but also putting time into their mathematics outside of sessions (I am a keen motivator here). Ultimately, the goal is for me to support students in achieving top grades in their mocks and exams, with my students always achieving their target grade and typically hitting A/A* A-level (8/9 GCSE).

My aim is to create a learning environment that is academically enriching but fundamentally enjoyable, as together these facilitate my students' success. I have a variety of resources and teaching styles which I apply to sessions, and I carefully monitor students’ progress as well as exam technique and presentation of answers to gain top marks.

I generally kick off tutoring engagements with a half price first session which is very much a trial - so - building an initial rapport, gauging mathematical ability, and then leaving it with the family and student to decide whether they would like to make a formal regular arrangement - no pressure at all.

I have tutored a range of subjects historically, but now focus predominantly on mathematics and geography, both GCSE and A-level (through to A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics) as well as the mathematical components of the Physics A-level.

I can also provide support with university applications, and specialise in Oxbridge applications for mathematics, engineering and physics (conducting mock interviews, support with admissions tests, personal statement support etc.)

I hold a master's degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University and A-levels in mathematics, further mathematics, physics, economics and geography. I have extensive experience in teaching mathematics (including Further Mathematics A-level), physics, geography and English as a foreign language (TEFL).

My experiences range from individual tutoring to teaching classes of up to 20 students. Though my personal preference is individual tuition or small class sizes, as it enables me to tailor my teaching style to my student(s). I cater for students of all levels of ability, and believe in the importance of unlocking the potential of every young person.

I love teaching - and if you feel I could be a potential fit for your son/daughter then please do get in touch.

I have a flexible rate for casual adult learners, so please do get in touch with your request and I’ll be happy to assess how I can support.

Tutoring Experience

  • 13 years experience as a private tutor in London (and formerly Oxford), (2010 to present). Predominantly tutoring in mathematics, physics and geography, but ultimately ranging from 7+ entrance examination tuition, through to A-level, and casual adult teaching. My students consistently achieve well beyond their initial working grade - to-date always exceeding target grades and most often A* results at A-level / 9 at GCSE.

  • English teacher at Jinju Health College, South Korea, (summer 2014). I was responsible for planning and teaching English to a class of medical students (aged 18-25) from 09.00-19.00 daily. The emphasis was on improving the students' grammatical ability and spoken English.

  • Mathematics/physics teacher in Guangzhou and Shanghai, China (summer 2015). Developed and taught a mathematics and physics program, aimed at students wishing to study at Oxbridge. Much of my work was individual student consultation, with most of this geared towards preparing the students for Oxbridge (e.g. personal statement consultation, talking about Oxford life, mentoring the students, delivering mock interviews).

  • 'Broadening horizons' engineering program tutor in Oxford (summer 2016). My role was as an engineering teacher and I had classes of 12-15 students. The course was designed to introduce the students to engineering, but the majority of my time was spent teaching the students some of the fundamental mathematics and physics that underpin the discipline.

Tutoring Approach

Most importantly, I like to get my students thinking, chatting about their subject and get them looking forward to each of their sessions. With this motivation and enthusiasm there, we have a committed and productive working environment. I genuinely feel like this has been the case with every student I have worked with.

It is essential for me to quickly understand how my students think, and to figure out what works best for them in terms of learning - so I work out whether they are more of a kinesthetic, visual or auditory learner and I utilise my relevant resources accordingly.

My first session is an opportunity for me to establish where the student's need is greatest, and to begin to learn how they learn and what motivates them. This helps me to come up with a plan for making enjoyable, educational sessions.

A typical session would begin with a review of the previous session's work, and a chance to go through and discuss homework. The way each session runs depends on my students' and parents' goals. Typically, I will aim to introduce concepts in the earlier part of the session, and then help the student to consolidate their understanding using a range of resources both on paper, online, and through verbal discussion. I provide all of my own resources, and have a wealth of material from which I base my lessons. I generally set homework as desired, but typically encourage it towards exam season.

My tuition is generally geared towards boosting students' exam grades, but I have also had students whose families just want their child to develop interest and engagement in a particular subject. I cater for all ages and abilities, and I ensure I stretch and challenge my students whether they are aiming for a C grade or an A* grade.

I offer a 50% discount for the first session.

I travel within reasonable distance, obviously the closer the better, but further travel is possible if reasonable public transport links allow.
