A teacher for over 30 years, I am also a senior examiner for Physics GCSE, and examine A level Physics.
I author, contributing regularly to Planet Science and other science publications, including recent A level textbooks. I was heavily involved in the BBC 'Bitesize' project and have acted on a consultant on numerous other science communication projects.
I am a member of the ASE (Association for Science Education) and have been a parent governor at my son's school as well as a trustee of the PTA.
Following relocation to the south-west, I am able to assist a small number of students with individual tuition and am equally happy to tutor in my home or to travel to the tutee. (Please note-If making an enquiry, it would be very helpful to let me know the exam board being followed, and if the student is currently year 12 or year 13. The start of year 13 is probably the 'sweet spot' for beginning Physics tuition).
I have taught physics at AS/A level for 30 years, covering all three of the major exam boards. I have taught GCSE science and GCSE physics across the age and ability range at a number of schools, both comprehensive and selective, in London and the South East.
I have tutored on a part-time basis for a similar length of time and naturally have recent CRB/ DBS checks.
As one-to-one tuition is, by definition, personalised, it's impossible to suggest a generic approach. I would, however, suggest that sessions are most productive where the student is an active participant, asking questions and not being afraid to make educated guesses when appropriate. I aim to make tuition sessions relaxed and yet productive. It might even be fun.
Exam technique is a central part of my 'philosophy'- it's sadly little use knowing the answer if you can't then express yourself in examiner-friendly form. As an A level Physics examiner myself, this insight can only be beneficial to the student.
