Personal Description:

My name is Ian and I am a Masters student at the University of Edinburgh studying International Development My previous studies include a BA and an MSc in Experimental and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge as well as a scholarship year in Fukuoka, Japan where I studied Japanese.

For the past two years I have been working for a charity as a manager of one of their learning centres which provide academic support sessions and deliver customised education programmes for schools and students aged 7-19. As part of the charity's leadership team I also trained staff on how to best provide tuition to students and took specific responsibility for the implementation of the charity's university application support as well as schemes run with the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.

This role followed on from working for the same charity as a secondary school specialist where I designed and delivered study and skill development programmes for secondary school pupils of all ages. Prior to this I worked as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in both the UK and Japan.

Tutoring Experience:

Over the past three and half years I have provided academic support and study skills development sessions on a daily basis to hundreds of different students. As well as providing tailored tuition in a broad range of subjects, I have designed and delivered a variety of educational programmes in conjunction with schools and teachers. This has given me a clear understanding of educational frameworks and assessment criteria and how to support students to achieve their academic targets… As an EFL teacher I also delivered group and one-to-one sessions, often designing curricula from scratch to meet my client's specific needs. My extensive experience of tutoring and teaching spans all age groups and a broad range of learning needs.

Due to my previous work supporting students with university applications and with CVs, I am also capable of delivering sessions themed around personal statements and job applications.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about supporting young people to achieve their academic potential. In order to do this I work with tutees to understand their individual learning needs and their particular goals and to then formulate a step-by-step plan which will allow them to achieve their targets… The first session I provide will be based on this and so will often involve an exploration of current knowledge as well as opportunities to build rapport and trust with the tutee which is vitally important for a successful tutoring experience.

Following on from the first session I then provide varied sessions which will build the student's confidence in the subject area by utilising their strengths as well as focussing on their areas for development. I use targeted and timely constructive feedback to solidify understanding and to help the student with the process of learning to learn.

At the heart of my tutoring is a calm and patient approach which creates an environment conducive to learning and encourages the student to explore their own ideas and to apply their knowledge to tackle new and unfamiliar questions and concepts.
