My interest in computing started when working as an electronics engineer for a large British electronics company as an apprentice. I went on a day release C&G course and gained a distinction in the final Telecommunications Technician examinations. This experience encouraged me to continue to improve my academic record and after I pursued HNC studies I applied for and was accepted on the Masters computer Science programme at the University of Hertfordshire. This was a 3 year part-time and I enjoyed immensely the challenges and knowledge gained that has rewarded me ever since and is still applicable to the everyday work environment.
Early during my career I joined the British Computer Society which promotes professional conduct and furtherance of information technology and practice and I now hold the 'Chartered IT Professional' title. I also belong to specialist groups that explore new trends and participate in their evening programs. Over the course of working in many sectors I have gained extensive commercial, public sector and industrial experience of the application of Computer Science. This has been applied using tools and techniques such as UML, Agile methodologies, real-time applications as well as working on very large secure database structures. Programming languages covers the range of low level machine code through to high level scripting such as PERL along with C++, various low level assembly languages.
I have recently taken early retirement from the Civil Service (HEO Grade) where I had worked for the past 9 years as a technical specialist. This role covered all aspects of software application testing both internal and 3rd party products such as web sites, database applications and dedicated customer relationship management products. Prior to this position I worked as a freelance application developer on a wide range of platforms (e.g. embedded, Windows & Linux).
I was pleased to learn that the intellectually challenging subject of Computer Science as a discipline has been added to the national curriculum as this subject is crucial and highly applicable to the technological era we live in today. My experience of the satisfaction gained from the creative side of this subject will enable me to give students the impetus to succeed in this subject that has huge potential for the future and the enduring foundations and concepts will hold true long after any passing technologies are obsolete.
I am a STEM Ambassador contributing in the Eastern region helping pupils and schools learn from my experience about technology and engineering. I am currently tutoring at both 'A' level and GCSE and in addition, my work history covered periods of supervision of graduate trainees, team leadership and other management responsibilities. I have also had first class training throughout my career especially during my employment with the UK Civil Service in a ministerial department.
I can offer my enthusiasm and deep knowledge of this subject gained in the wider world to guide and assist tutees.
