Personal Description:

Having been working for 35 years directly in IT or IT related services, I have an empathy with beginners and experienced staff and students starting (or restarting) and experienced users with a specific goal.
Using and assisting others in the use of Microsoft, MAC and Linux (SuSe, Debian, RHEL, MINT, FreeBSD, etc.) products I have a good working (and pro-active) knowledge of operating systems as well as more general packages (word-processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools, databases, etc.) and uses - some not general and very specific from setting up and maintaining a web server to security monitoring of network infrastructure (switches, routers, etc.).
Having spent the last 5/6 years in service provision and Service Desk support (and ITIL qualified) I am happy to help others achieve their goals whether learning to write an email, CV or document to CAD and statistical analysis using Python and R to using email.

Tutoring Experience:

Teaching higher educational colleagues and lecturers.
Training colleagues in networking design, configuration, installation, maintenance and development (CISCO/Extreme/HP)
Teaching FE IT courses
Database design, implementation, access and management - MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MS-SQL

Tutoring Approach:

I like to meet or at least talk to the tutee to establish what their aims and what they want to learn (or what they _think_ they want to learn) and work out a plan with them that suits them and their requirements.
Work can be carried out remotely with tasks and assessments being carried out remotely (as necessary) with regular assessments of progress.
A relaxed (not necessarily easy-going) approach to ensure the tutee gains understanding, confidence, momentum and increases self-motivation.
