Academically I am a semi retired senior lecturer in leadership and management as well as sports policy and development. I am also fortunate to have a had a long career in both the public and voluntary sectors up to board level. I am still a board member of two major south west charities as well a being a postgraduate support trainer. I feel as both practitioner and academic this offers added value to my work with you.
I have also had many years of experience of working with learners of all types and level including international and mature. I have coached and tutored hundreds of students and take some pride in that my committed concern for my students has helped them gain a fuller understanding of their subject, develop their study skills and often boost their own self esteem and confidence
I work with tutees in a wide area including Exeter and Plymouth or further afield if skyping.
I was a senior lecturer at the University of St Mark and St John in Plymouth for about fifteen years after other careers in Local Government, Leisure Consultancy and Survey Research. I worked with students on campus but also have extensive experience of teaching International students in London where my cultural interests and empathy formed good relationships and academic success. My specialist subjects are leadership and management (I was head of the postgraduate programme) and sports development and policy. For several years I have also been a major contributor the University Plymouth's postgraduate research skill support programme running workshops including critical thinking, managing feedback and set back and managing research. I have personal interests in the psychology of study skills and critical thinking.
While transfer of knowledge and experience is essential in tutoring, my real concern in working with a student is to empower them to be able develop and own the right skills to access learning and develop his or her own skills, knowledge and confidence in their ability. The slightly hackneyed saying about a person 'who has a fishing rod will live for ever' is in this case apt. I am also a qualified practising executive coach and this approach of encouraging the student to identify strengths and areas of improvement and to develop their own programme to optimise success is especially productive. My tutoring style is relaxed, discursive and friendly and always supportive based on good planning and preparation in advance of the session. I have a particular sympathy to international students where language and the change in academic standards between cultures is often a further disadvantage and can often be corrected fairly easily.
