Personal Description:

I recently finished a PhD in philosophy, and also studied philosophy at a Bachelors and Masters level, attaining the highest qualifications available at each stage. My area of specialism is twentieth and twenty-first century European philosophy (also known as continental philosophy), from Deleuze to Foucault, Heidegger to Adorno, but thanks to my extensive training I also have an interest in and good knowledge of the span of the history of philosophy.

I'm also well-versed in areas of musicology and art theory - my PhD thesis looked at the relation between philosophy and experimental music - and would be very happy to work with students interested in the cultural musicology, ethnomusicology, and the history and theory of the musical avant-garde, as well as modernist, postmodernist, and contemporary art theory. On top of that I've also researched in and around literary theory, media theory, and cultural studies.

Tutoring Experience:

I have much experience helping students with essays and dissertations on a one-to-one basis, assisting them through the process from the initial research stage through to organising a work routine up to the final edits. Recently much of my tutoring has covered A Level Philosophy, particularly helping students with approaches to writing and studying.

I have taught Masters-level seminars in philosophy at Kingston University London, covering a broad range of material from Kant and Hegel to aesthetics. This also involved giving essay-writing and other methodology workshops, marking essays and exercises, and, maybe most importantly, serving as a point of contact between students and staff, helping and supporting students wherever possible. I also have experience offering guidance with university applications at undergraduate, Masters, and doctoral levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach each student relationship individually, developing an approach that caters best to their needs. In some cases this will involve going through syllabus together and helping the student develop good work habits and close-reading skills, in others the focus will be on the technical and methodological skills of constructing an essay. I am happy to take on a variety of tutoring approaches, from helping students develop a solid understanding of coursework to offering guidance in the preparation, planning, writing, and editing of essays.

Crucial in all of this is developing a relationship where the student feels free and empowered to, in the short term, produce the best work they can, and, in the long term, develop important skills and approaches which will help them throughout their academic career. My approach is not a didactic one, and I am most keen to facilitate learning in a positive environment and to help students develop confidence in their own abilities.
