Personal Description:

Bonjour! I am a Postgraduate student at Glasgow University looking to put my language-teaching abilities to good use. I offer thorough, flexible and competitively priced tutoring in a relaxed and friendly environment.

I was brought up in a bilingual family, as well as having lived & been educated in both English & French-speaking countries. My LLCE degree qualifies me to teach the English language, and also has French as a Foreign Language as a component; general language-teaching theory represented a sizeable portion of coursework as well. The end result is that I am equipped to offer a properly planned & effective tutoring programme adapted to the specificities of a wide variety of pupils.

Tutoring Experience:

I arrived in Glasgow only last year, before which I was still studying in Marseille. During the last 2 years of my degree there, I undertook part-time tutoring work and I am looking to get back into it now: in Marseille and the surrounding countryside, I provided mainly English language tutoring, but also occasionally covered French/English Literature & History, as well as French as a Foreign Language.

Additionally, as a bilingual always keen to help others throughout my academic career, I have often provided assistance to those around me trying to improve their English/French language skills, and the great results sometimes obtained in this informal fashion participate in my belief that learning is, before anything else, an interaction. The most valuable service a tutor can provide is that which a textbook or a classroom cannot: a personalised interaction with the language, and hence a learning context where the motivation to overcome linguistic challenges tends to be stronger since that context is no longer as impersonal.

Tutoring Approach:

Through studies & personal research I have acquired a good knowledge-base of the culture, politics, literature & history of both the English & French speaking worlds, and I like to exploit this in my tutoring when the opportunity arises. Above all, however, I believe that the best learning happens when the learner engages in a challenging way with material that they have an interest in: I devise sessions especially for you, taking into account your personal tastes in study material just as much as your specific needs regarding progression in the language. I like to think of tutoring as a guide-traveller relationship as much as a teacher-pupil one.

This does not mean that a session is all fun & games, of course, nor that you will escape completely from grammar exercises, etc… if there is a pressing need for these - but I take as a given that you would not pay £20/hour for me to merely act as a talking textbook. Most practitioners & theorists of language-teaching agree that the greater frequency & depth of your immersion in a language & its cultural context, the easier and more lasting your progress will be. This principle influences my style of tutoring: I expect pupils to participate in crafting a programme that will maximise their immersion, making for a more interactive and ultimately more enriching experience.
